Moving FORWARD

The former Brunswick facility, operated by Hercules (1920-2009) and Pinova (2010-2023), was a resins manufacturing facility. Using pine stumps left behind by from commercial loggers across the southeastern United States, it produced naval stores and specialty chemicals; most notably, wood rosin, turpentine, pine oil, and the insecticide toxaphene. The former plant properties are now vacant but remain in the active custodianship of Hercules and Pinova.

Hercules has spent more than $94 million over the last 30 years at the Brunswick facility, the 009 Landfill, and the Terry Creek site, addressing and remediating conditions related to the site’s historical industrial operations. This work is conducted under the oversight of two different government agencies: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Hercules has also provided more than $250,000 in technical assistance grants to the Glynn Environmental Coalition, as part of an EPA program supporting community participation in the environmental decision-making at the Terry Creek and 009 Landfill sites.

Three sites, two agencies

  1. The Brunswick Facility. Remediation In-Progress. In 2022, Hercules finalized its Corrective Action Plan for comprehensive remediation of the Brunswick facility incorporating feedback from EPD and the public gathered during the 2021/2022 review processes. Over the past several years, Hercules has worked to implement the plan through remediation of soil and groundwater. Following the plant’s 2023 closure and 2024/2025 demolition and decommissioning, Hercules and Pinova intend to adapt and update the plan to help pave the way for the site’s redevelopment.

  2. The 009 Landfill. Remediation Complete. Hercules has completed a successful remediation of the 009 Landfill in partnership with the EPA. Part of that property is now leased to a neighboring car dealership, and another part is a certified wildlife habitat. Hercules recently took voluntary steps to strengthen the long-term effectiveness of the site’s monitored natural attenuation remedy, adding additional groundwater monitoring wells. Hercules has also worked closely with the neighboring property owner during that property’s development, to protect both the new construction and the integrity of the landfill remedy.

  3. Terry Creek. Remediation In-Progress. Construction of the final interim remedy for the Terry Creek outfall channel was completed in July 2025. developed in Collaboration with EPA and approved by both EPD and a federal district court, the remedy involved capping the former channel and building a new state-of-the-art stormwater channel to convey stormwater from the Brunswick community to Dupree Creek. Additional investigation in the creeks and at the dredge spoil areas was conducted in late 2025 and planning for future investigations are currently underway in 2026.
