009 LANDFILL

The completed 009 landfill is now a staging area for a local auto dealership.

Hercules met all of the established remedial action objectives at the 009 Landfill in 1999 and continued to refine and strengthen that remedy in the decades since. Thanks to the success of Hercules’ remediation, a portion of the site is currently being reused by a neighboring car dealership.

Hercules stabilized more than 100,000 cubic yards of soil and sludge, capped the 7-acre historical landfill, and continues to monitor both groundwater and the landfill cap to ensure the effectiveness of the remedies.

In the mid-2000’s, Hercules partnered with the Superfund Redevelopment Program to enable the sites reuse by the neighboring local auto dealership.  The dealership built a parking lot at the site, which added another layer of cap protection.

In 2022, Hercules worked with EPA and EPD to inject aquifer amendments to enhance the future protectiveness of the established monitored natural attenuation remedy for groundwater. The amendments successfully reduced benzene concentrations in several monitoring wells. Groundwater monitoring remains ongoing.

In 2025, Hercules adjusted the monitoring well network to support the neighboring property, relocating some of the groundwater monitoring network to accommodate new construction. An environmental covenant was established on the neighboring property to help facilitate the new construction.

Hercules has partnered with Tandem Global since 2015 to increase biological diversity at the Site. The southern pond area is designated as conservation habitat, allowing birds, turtles, and other local wildlife to utilize the cover boards and basking logs around the perimeter of the large pond, while game cameras monitor their activities and numbers.

The conservation work achieved WHC Gold Certification by Tandem Global (Gold being the highest-scoring category) in 2026. WHC Certification® is a globally recognized leader in conservation and biodiversity programs. This recognition highlights our ongoing commitment to conservation and environmental stewardship.

Hercules’ restored habitats at both the 009 Landfill and the Brunswick facility are certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC). The enhanced wetland habitat at 009 Landfill supports a variety of birds and reptiles. Both sites have bird nesting boxes and wildflower fields, providing habitats for birds, butterflies, and other pollinators.
